Therefore, it is critical to keep the information in your Aadhaar card up-to-date.
There may be instances where you may want to update information in your Aadhaar card. There may be typographical errors in your Aadhaar card. Or your mobile number may have changed. Or you may have shifted your residence. In all such cases or many more, you need to update information in your Aadhaar card.
How do you update information in your Aadhaar Card?
There are three broad ways to update your Aadhaar information.
- Online (by visiting Self Service Online Portal or the UIDAI website)
- By Post
- By visiting the Aadhaar center (enrollment center)
You can’t update all pieces of information through all the methods
All kinds of changes can be made by visiting an Aadhaar Enrollment center.
However, in case of Online or Postal methods, there are certain limitations.
For instance, you need to visit an Aadhaar enrollment center to get your photograph, fingerprints or Iris Scan updated. These updations can’t be done online or by post.
Similarly, you cannot update your mobile number by post. It can be done online or by visiting an Aadhaar center.
Here is the matrix of modifications that can be done through various methods.
You may be required to submit proofs
Now, some of the changes that you are making will require proofs too. For instance, if you want to update your address in Aadhaar database, you need to submit (upload) proof of the new address along with the application.
UIDAI has provided a list of acceptable documents that you can submit. You can access the list here.
Update by Visiting an Aadhaar enrollment center
This is likely to be the swiftest method too. To find the nearest Aadhaar center, you can visit the following link.
You need to visit the Aadhaar center, fill up the requisite form and submit proofs (carry originals).
Update Phone Number/Address etc. in Aadhaar Online
With this method, there is a caveat. You need to have the mobile number that is registered with Aadhaar and the mobile number should be active.
This is because, in case of online updation, a One Time Password (OTP) to your registered mobile number (with Aadhaar). You need to enter the OTP to make any update.
If the registered mobile number is not working, you need to visit Aadhaar center or use post method to make any changes. Alternatively, you can visit Aadhaar center to first update your mobile number and subsequently make the other change requests online.

Points to Note
- Send the document by India Post (and not courier service).

- All the documents need to be self-attested
- On the packet, write “Aadhaar Correction/Updation”
What are the charges?
If you are requesting update online or by post, you do not need to pay anything.
If you are visiting the Aadhaar centre to update information, you need to pay to a fee of Rs 25.
How long does it take?
It could take up to 90 days.
I believe this depends on the information that you are trying to update. The changes that require documentary evidence may take more time. This is because, in such cases, the document needs to be verified.
Once your information is updated, you can even download your Aadhaar card online.
Disclosure: Fortunately, I have not had to update any details in Aadhaar database. Therefore, I have no firsthand experience in changing Aadhaar details.
